The tomato is perhaps one of the most underrated vegetables – not because it is not used very often, but precisely because it is so often used without really appreciating it. And that while tomatoes can be absolutely fantastic, provided they are of good quality. Then even the simplest tomato salad is a feast for the tongue! With this tip you can make your tomatoes even tastier.
We saw the tip with Clare de Boer, who kept a food diary in the New York Times . De Boer is co-owner and chef at the fantastic King Restaurant in New York.
Make tomatoes tastier with red wine vinegar
De Boer’s tip for making tomatoes tastier? Marinate your tomatoes briefly in a mix of a dash of red wine vinegar, some (good) olive oil and salt. This brings out the sweetness in your tomatoes.
Even tomatoes that are not yet fully ripe, and therefore a lot less sweet, become very tasty this way. Or, as she herself writes: “A fantasy of San Marzano”, where the tastiest tomatoes come from.
Her husband makes the best BLTs with these tomatoes. The red wine vinegar also absorbs a little bit into the bread, which makes it less dry.
Take your BLT to the next level
The tasty tomatoes are step one in making a perfect BLT, but the B and L in the sandwich must also be fantastic. For a BLT, for example, bacon often works better than the bacon in the supermarket, because it is a bit thicker.
Also, don’t forget to pay attention to your bread. From sourdough to spelled or corn: the possibilities are endless and completely dependent on your own taste. We would, however, choose to use bread from the bakery – that’s always just a bit better than a supermarket copy.
Oh, and try grilling your bread in the pan instead of the toaster, with a little olive oil. Success guaranteed!
