She is also called the female Jamie Oliver: the British Nadiya Hussain. In any case, she is at least as popular in her own country as her colleague. She owes this to her participation in The Great British Bake Off (which she won!) and her popular cooking shows on Netflix. Culy explains to you why we are madly in love with this culinary heroine.
She is followed on Instagram by everyone from Yotam Ottolenghi to Nigella Lawson. And that’s not for nothing.
Nadiya won the sixth season of The Great British Bake Off (what we know as Heel Holland Bakt ) in 2015 and immediately captured the hearts of English TV viewers. She is called the most beloved winner of that program.
Who is Nadiya Hussain?
She has now become an integral part of British television and attracted attention with cooking programs such as Nadiya’s Time To Eat and Nadiya Bakes (both from the BBC, also available on Netflix in the Netherlands ).
She writes a column for The Times Magazine, won several awards (she appeared on the list of the most influential people in Britain in 2017 – hello!), was allowed to bake the birthday cake for Queen Elizabeth (hello again!) and has country has released a whole series of books. There was already one in the Netherlands: Time to eat (‘rich recipes for busy days’), but grab your wish list, because there is another book coming up.
Her latest book, ‘ Nadiya Bakt ‘, will be published in the Netherlands on 20 October. Biscuits, pies, pies, sandwiches, recipes from her Netflix series Nadiya Bakes : you will find it all in it. Pulled chicken donuts, tea ramisu with summer fruit, spanakopita, brioche: are your mouth watering yet?
Even if you’re not a big fan of making cakes or cookies, Nadiya’s enthusiasm is infectious in this book. After all, baking remains her true love and you can tell.
And that while she comes from a family with a mother who mainly used the oven for storage. Nadiya taught herself how to bake from cookbooks and YouTube videos. Her father can cook: he was a cook and owner of an Indian restaurant.
Nadiya is also an example of someone who chases her dreams. At the time of her participation in The Great British Bake Off, she was a full-time mother (she has three children) and was also studying at university. After she won the program, she decided to fully pursue a culinary career.
In her final speech – which by the way was the most watched final of TGBBO ever – she said: “ I’m never gonna put boundaries on myself ever again. I’m never gonna say I can’t do it. I’m never gonna say ‘maybe’. I’m never gonna say, ‘I don’t think I can.’ I can and I will. Viewers at home shed a tear.
So she made that happen. Nadiya’s recipes are accessible, fresh, colorful and fun: in fact exactly as she appears herself. What we like most about Nadiya (besides her great recipes), is her humor. Just take a look at the above video (and practically every video on YouTube where she appears).
In addition, she gave us the idea to use chips in an omelette, for a fritatta-like creation (brilliant!) and she maintains an Instagram account that inspires us to use special ingredients (like banana peels ) and makes our mouth water at the same time. .
Culy loves Nadiya, that’s for sure. We would say: go watch Nadiya Bakes on Netflix like lightning. And keep an eye out for that book .
