Meatloaf is a quintessential American dish, usually served with barbecue sauce. Super tasty and especially useful for a party, for example, because you can make it well in advance. This is our favorite recipe: a mix of a recipe from Matt Preston , Martha Stewart and our very own Monique .
- 1 kilo of minced beef
- 220 ml milk
- 125 grams breadcrumbs
- 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1 red onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- pepper and salt
For the BBQ sauce:
- 200 ml ketchup
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- To taste: Tabasco or cayenne pepper
Preheat your oven to 175 degrees.
In a large bowl, knead the minced meat, chopped onion and garlic, salt & pepper to taste and the breadcrumbs. Add the egg and knead. Add the milk and continue kneading. The mixture now seems much too wet, but knead it for a while, then it will automatically become a nice, creamy mass.
If you have a cake tin / cake tin, line it with baking paper and put the mincemeat mixture in it. If you don’t have a cake tin, you can also take a baking tray, place baking paper on it and form a long wide loaf of the minced meat mixture and place it in the middle of the plate.
Place the meatloaf in the oven at 175 degrees for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, make the BBQ sauce by boiling all ingredients (see opposite) in a pan over medium heat. It should be a syrupy, thick dark red sauce. If you like it spicy, add some extra Tabasco or cayenne pepper.
When the meatloaf has been in the oven for 30 minutes, pour the sauce over the top – spread evenly with a brush if necessary. Put the meatloaf back and bake for another 30 minutes. If you want to check whether it is really well cooked, use a core thermometer to measure the correct temperature: in the middle it should be about 65-70 degrees.
Let cool a bit and enjoy.
