The Italians and their culinary rules: we think it’s fantastic. Which pasta goes with which sauce (“You’re not going to make carbonara without spaghetti?”), how al dente the risotto should be (more al dente than you might think) or how cappuccinos should only be consumed before 11 in the morning. Even opening a pack of spaghetti has its instructions, as it turns out.
At least that’s what an Italian nonna tells TheKitchn . But if there’s one thing we trust blindly, it’s the culinary advice of Italian grandmothers. In short: we prick up our ears.
Open a pack of spaghetti
According to nonna Elda Cooks (who also has her own TikTok channel , how nice) there is an important rule: never open a pack of spaghetti with scissors .
Well, we didn’t see that one coming. How then? Simply, by holding the spaghetti pack vertically and giving it a good whack on your counter : BAM. Due to the force you exert, the package of spaghetti will open spontaneously and the pasta will appear on its own.
Scoring at Elda
The advantages? You don’t have to bother looking for those kitchen scissors. Also handy: the package of spaghetti will automatically open evenly. It also immediately makes you feel a lot more Italian, which is nice.
And above all: you score points at Elda. If those aren’t #goals, then we don’t know what are.
