Let’s be clear: ice cream is fantastic. Always. Whether it’s bacon ice cream , basil ice cream or just plain frozen yogurt . But let’s be honest, ice cream is even better when it also looks fantastic. With such a nice wafer, for example. Or an umbrella. Or… with a chocolate shell over your ice cream. You know, the one that crackles wonderfully when you hit it with your dessert spoon. Perfection, nun?
Good news: you can also make that chocolate shell insanely fast. Food blogger Carolina Gelen shared the secret with us on Instagram. Besides chocolate ( obviously ), you just need one other ingredient for such a great topping: coconut oil.
A coconut oil chocolate shell
There is a reason why vegan cheese consists largely of coconut oil : when the oil is cold, it is hard, but when heated it melts quickly – just like real cheese. And it is precisely that fast switching between solidified and liquid that makes coconut oil so perfect for making a chocolate shell on your ice cream. After all: if it is liquid, you can easily pour it over the ice, and as soon as it comes into contact with the frozen ice, it solidifies again.
It also helps that you only pour a thin layer over the ice. The less there is to freeze, the faster it will go. Especially when the ice cream just came out of the freezer.
This is how you make the chocolate shell on your ice cream
With two ingredients, preparation can’t be anything but super simple – and it is. In Carolina’s video we see how she puts 100 grams of chocolate (this is for 6 to 8 sundaes) in the microwave with 3 teaspoons of coconut oil until the substance has melted. Make sure to stir after every 10 seconds in the microwave to mix the chocolate and oil well.
And then there is only one task left: scoop some scoops of ice cream into a coupe, pour the chocolate sauce over it (if necessary sprinkle with sprinkles ) and wait for it to harden. Which is about a few seconds, so after that you can just attack. crack!
Oh, and want to make it look even more chic? Try it with white chocolate. Or, just like Carolina, make a chocolate shell over your ice cream of pure and white chocolate. Ice-ice baby!
