Lubricate the bicycle chains and get the stretch pants out of the closet: the restaurants are open again! In any case, our reservations are already in the system, so that the anticipation can start again. And a dinner like this doesn’t have to cost a lot. Because the idea that good food equals an empty wallet is of course very 1982. This list of our favorite restaurants for eating out in Amsterdam, on a small budget, proves this.
And then we are talking about the caliber around the table for at least an hour, so not standing or a one-way snack. Which, by the way, we are also in favor of, but that’s enough material for another article.
Restaurants in Amsterdam on a budget
Xi’an Delicious Foods
A successful option for any time of the day, including at dinner: Xi’an Delicious Foods. First only in The Hague, now also to be admired in Amsterdam. Freshly prepared noodles in all shapes and sizes, as made for centuries in the Chinese city of Xian. Divine flavors for next to nothing. So a Chinese crepe or hamburger can also be added to that.
Born and raised in Sardinia, Salvatorica owner Roberto Mura has all the experience to make (perhaps Amsterdam’s tastiest) Italian pasta. Where he previously only supplied it to (very fine) restaurants, we, as very grateful individuals, can now also sit down at a table with a view of where the pasta magic happens . We mention it just to be sure: Salvatorica does not serve alcohol. In any case, you’ll have some leftovers for dessert.
If you want to receive a warm and extremely friendly welcome in addition to really tasty (and affordable) food, you should go to Semai in Amsterdam North. This Eritrean and Ethiopian restaurant serves, among other things, addictively tasty injeras with a mix of meat and/or vegetarian dishes. Is North a bit too far out of the route? Queen of Sheba in Westerpark and Selam Afrika in East also serve very tasty West African dishes.
Poppy corner 35
The classic of the classics when it comes to good food without financial guilt. The Chinese restaurant New King is centrally located because on the Zeedijk, it is of such a size that you never have to wait long for a place and it serves the most richly filled Sui Kau in the city. One of the best choices when it comes to restaurants in Amsterdam with a small budget.
Besides a great name, the accessible Royalvis in Noord is a self-proclaimed ‘refuge for every fish lover from Amsterdam and beyond’. The fish shop and restaurant-in-one displays a large selection of fish from which you can choose (type, quantity and side dish), and then take a seat while the fish are prepared for you on the spot. So go there.
Van der Pekstraat 87
Pizza restaurants in Amsterdam can no longer be counted on twelve hands and we (in some cases) do not mind that at all. Because: more options for really good food in Amsterdam on a small budget. Our favourites: Nnea in Oud-West, Eatmosfera in East and the Poppy in North. Although the latter, in addition to its delicious pizzas, is also a very good idea because of the atmosphere and the rest of the menu.
The same applies to windows: always a good idea. That’s what more entrepreneurs thought, by the way, given the rapidly increasing number of window shops. We can discuss the best ramen in Amsterdam for hours on end. Among our favorites are at least Ramen Kingdom and SORA Sapporo .
Favorite for years (and therefore a little bit under false pretenses slid into this list): Lalla Rookh at the end of the Dappermarkt. Always a good idea to pick up roti here, but also nice to take your time in the small restaurant next door. Not one where you can dine for four hours, but one where you can enjoy delicious Surinamese food. Looking for more authentic Surinamese food in East? Then walk for a few minutes and then take a seat at Ricardo’s .
For good Chinese food, good food and really just an unforgettable experience, we regularly visit the iconic boat of Sea Palace. The dinner menu doesn’t necessarily belong to the low budget category, but the dim sum (which is also served in the evening!) does. And we also feel like it at the end of the day. In that category, Full Moon Garden is certainly a good option. Enough restaurants to visit in Amsterdam in the coming period, for a small budget.
