The best vegetarian/vegan restaurants in the Netherlands

Must Try

You want to eat out and have a great evening. You would like to consciously do this vegetarian or plant-based – or at least you are open to it. But what are really good addresses where you can indulge your vegan foodie heart? Culy made a list of the best vega & vegan restaurants in the Netherlands.

It was big news when Eleven Madison Park in New York – one of the most famous restaurants in the world – announced it was going completely vegan. A cool move and also so welcome, because whether such a top restaurant cooks vega or vegan, most foodies will be a sausage, as long as it is tasty.

Also in the Netherlands there are fortunately more and more places where they prepare the most delicious dishes and that also vegan(s). Culy made a list of the best vega & vegan restaurants for an evening of culinary delight.

Are you missing a vegetarian or vegan restaurant in this list? Tip the editors!

The best vegan/vegan restaurants

Yerba, Amsterdam (vegan)

Ruysdaelstraat 48, Amsterdam

Restaurant Yerba is a place for vegans, vegetarians and omnivores, but the vegan dishes here are so exciting that they get everyone excited for an evening of plant-based dining. We think they are culinary game changers . Also nice: the starting point here is vegan cooking, but you can always ask for a piece of meat or fish – for example if you are with table companions who prefer that.

Bonboon, Amsterdam (vegan)

Piraeusplein 59, Amsterdam

According to culinary critic Mara Grimm, Bonboon serves the best vegan menu in town. She gave the restaurant an 8 in her column in Het Parool. You can find this vegan restaurant on the KNSM island in Amsterdam and sit down for a three-, four- or five-course menu. It includes dishes such as blackened Turkish bell pepper with onion, urfa chili , bay oil & fermented cashew cream with seaweed, but also an exciting ‘blue-vein cheese’, which is of course vegan. Go discover it!

Obsidian by Graphite, Amsterdam (vegan)

Amstelstraat 17, Amsterdam

Twice a month, star chef Peter Gast of Graphite* prepares a vegan menu that he serves in Obsidian by Graphite: the new hotspot under the restaurant. The Vegan Test Kitchen then makes fifteen to twenty small vegan dishes that you can eat while lounging and listening to music. Culy’s Winnie ate a tiny macaron with beet, sesame, cherry blossom and ponzu that she still talks about today. Note: the hotspot is actually not a restaurant, but a speakeasy , where it’s all about vegan food and music. You can find out exactly when you can go there on the site .

De Waaghals, Amsterdam (vegan & vegan)

Frans Halsstraat 29, Amsterdam

At restaurant De Waaghals in Amsterdam you will be guided by the chef’s surprise menu. It is available in a vegetarian and a vegan version. Fine dining in other words, and that completely vegetarian. The restaurant has been around since 1981 and still feels contemporary. We think it’s handsome!

Madre, Amsterdam (vegan)

Westerstraat 186 BG, Amsterdam

It’s not all that hard at Madre in Amsterdam. This restaurant describes itself as “Modern Mexican cuisine meets Amsterdam flair”. You could also add a touch of Jordaan. But secretly, this Mexican also only serves vegetarian dishes. The guacamole is fresher than fresh: it is made in front of you at the table. But also the tamales with pico de gallo, the pozole (soup) and tacos with king oyster mushroom make our mouth water. Come to Madre!

Vegetarian, Utrecht (vegetarian & vegan)

Schoutenstraat 17, 3512 GA Utrecht

A place that serves vegetarian pizzas: that’s heaven for all vegetarians. In the evening you can opt for pasta or risotto at Vegitalian, but we strongly recommend that you try the pizza. For example, go for a quattro formaggi  with vegan (!) mozzarella, Parmesan, scamorza and gorgonzola, for a  no tuna , spicy  no pepperoni  or a delicious  mushroom & truffle  with portobello and  black garlic  sauce  (the favorite of Culy’s Maaike).

Kasvio, Utrecht (vegan)

Rijksstraatweg 20, Utrecht

The Metal Cathedral in Utrecht is a quirky location where you can go for just about everything from organic markets to parties, to that great bakery that lives there; amadeus. Another such rabbit from the top hat is the vegan restaurant located here, called Kasvio. In Finnish that means herbarium and that covers the load well for a business where they cook with fresh produce from the garden and everything is plant-based. From Thursday to Sunday you can enjoy an extensive five-course dinner with dishes such as fried salsify and miso sprouts with Hollandaise sauce, pine needles and blood orange.

Roundabout, Rotterdam (vegan)

Goudsesingel 230, Rotterdam

Expect a fully vegetarian menu with vegan options and a large list full of natural wines at restaurant Rotonde . They only cook with products from the Netherlands and often locally as well. What makes Rotonde just as unique is the open wood fire on which chef Jord prepares all his culinary trophies.

De Vleesch Lobby, Rotterdam (vegetarian & vegan)

Raampoortstraat 16, Rotterdam

The Vegetarian Butcher runs a pop-up restaurant in the Hofbogen in Rotterdam for eight weeks. From 12:00 to 20:00 you can enjoy iconic meat dishes here, but then made with ‘the new meat’. In other words: you think you are really eating a piece of chicken, but it is purely vegetable. They also deliver at home.

Rabbit food, Arnhem (vegan)

Klarendalseweg 477-1, Arnhem

The restaurant was a big hit and it wasn’t just because of its great name. Culinary critic Hiske Versprille (De Volkskrant) was also enthusiastic. This vegan Italian decided to close its doors in November, because the founders wanted to stop at their peak. But don’t worry vegans and vegan-curious people: Rabbit food opened a take-away concept with plant-based soul food . It’s called Rabbit Food Express. Incidentally, they promise to come back with a restaurant, but how and when exactly, that is not yet known…

Vegan-friendly restaurants

In addition to restaurants that are completely vegetarian or vegan, there are also restaurants that are increasingly vegan-friendly. There are always enough vegan menu options here or you can ask for them without being looked away. Culy collects those spots on this restaurant page .
